Jonathan Hari – best known for his book “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs” has turned his focus to depression and anxiety. He tells us that almost everything we’ve been told about depression and anxiety is wrong. He argues the case that they are not caused by chemical imbalances in our brain, but rather by imbalances in the way we live, and presents these as nine different causes of anxiety and depression. Between Christmas and new year, fully relaxed on the beach, I read this book and found the arguments very convincing. He’s analysed the research, and he’s talked to numerous scientists and psychologists, and so much of what he says rings through even at an intuitive level. The third section of the book is all about how to reconnect - his answer to the problem. This book is sure to be widely read and discussed. Highly recommended.
