If you read The Future Eaters, which looked at the evolution of animals, plants and people in Australasia, you’ll know how good a story he can tell.
In this new book he does the same for Europe – taking us back 100 million years to when it was formed through the interaction of Africa, Asia and North America.
For a while it was a tropical island, with elephants, rhinos, deer and lions – and even coral reefs. Flannery takes us through the rise and fall of species, the meeting of ancient humans and Neanderthals, right up to the present day where there are actually more wolves in Europe than in North America. On the way you’ll meet eccentric scientists, you’ll learn about the ice ages and tectonic shifts, and you’ll also learn about the rewilding of Europe which promises to be a very interesting experience indeed.
