Recommended by Amy Hotz

Amy is a keen children’s book nerd and spends a lot of time reading and reviewing picture books with her toddler, Fenrir. But it’s not all colourful pictures! Her passion is getting kids reading, and her life's mission is to get the right books in the right hands. Ask her for advice or recommend something to her and watch her eyes light up!

You know those books that feel like super quick easy reads but then you get to say, the third chapter and you just have to keep going and if you stop reading you just wander around in a daze wondering what happens? What are the characters doing? Where will they end up?
Yeah. This one.

Outside is told from a young girl named Ele’s point of view. She is in what she calls The Tower. As we read on we realize it’s a locked room and her captor, known as Him, visits once a week with a heartbreaking motive…please be warned that this is not a light book. It deals with criminal abduction, sexual abuse and social isolation. It has many triggers so be prepared if you want to tackle it. I think it’s very important to read though so please don’t be put off by the themes.

This intense thriller had me from the first page and still hasn’t let me go. After I finished it I jumped on the authors website and downloaded a short story from Zeb’s point of view and I still want more.

If you have read Small Spaces by Sarah Epstein or I Stop Somewhere by TE Carter, Outside is the book to read next. I am loving all the psychological thrillers that are starting to appear, told from the perspective of the victim in a way that makes you really feel like part of the story, the outrage at the experience and the sorrow at the loss.
