An Interview With Geraldine Brooks by Lana

Barbara Horgan from Boffins Books spoke to Geraldine Brooks recently about her new book, The Secret Chord. Geraldine won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for her book, March, and has now turned her eye to a historical tale about Kind David. Find out what fascinates Geraldine about historical stories, and how she drew on her experience as a middle east correspondant to write as authentically as she could about women back in King David's time. For the writers, Geraldine gives tips on how to research effectively and how she uses recollections of characters to tell backstory.

Marijke is the Customer Service Supervisor at Boffins and has been a Boffin for over five years, and a bird fanatic for even longer. She reads anything interesting.

The Secret Chord is a retelling of the biblical king David's life by his close advisor and prophet, Natan. Natan sets out to record the king's life as it was, not as legend and myth would tell it, and in the process reveals the succeses and failures of the king. David's choices and actions have long-reaching effects on those around him, and Natan witnesses it all - sometimes as a collaborator, and sometimes condemning the action of his king. It's also a glimpse into the history of the Middle East region. The use of the Hebrew names for the characters and places really stood out to me in giving this story new life.
