The story of Janet Millett and her husband the Rev. Edward Millett, is written as a tribute by the author having been inspired by Janet's book, 'An Australian Parsonage or, the Settler and the Savage in Western Australia'.

Janet Millett, author and artist, and her husband the Rev. Edward Millett, spent five years in York, Western Australia from the end of 1863 to early 1869 when Rev. Edward was the Colonial Chaplain of the Holy Trinity Church. After the couple returned to England in 1869 Janet wrote her book based on her journals, diaries and notebooks which she kept during her time in York. Her book was published by Edward Stanford, London in 1872 and a facsimile edition was published by University of Western Australia Press, Crawley, Western Australia, in 1980.

The author follows the path of the Milletts from England to York and describes what became of their lives after they returned to England. It also includes the exciting new discovery of two further publications by Janet entitled, 'West Australian Natives' and 'School Life in West Australia'. Both were featured in a missionary magazine in 1872 and 1873. These articles are printed in full in chapter 7.

The Millett's left a wonderful legacy to the people of Western Australia where the couple are held in high esteem throughout the York and District. People are inspired by Janet's book and are very grateful to her for capturing the history of York in the 1860s, the oldest inland town in the state.
