Recommended by Amy Hotz

Amy is a keen children’s book nerd and spends a lot of time reading and reviewing picture books with her toddler, Fenrir. But it’s not all colourful pictures! Her passion is getting kids reading, and her life's mission is to get the right books in the right hands. Ask her for advice or recommend something to her and watch her eyes light up!

Scott Westerfeld is back with another magnificent, paranormally twisted story of love, terror and finding reality within chaos. Afterworlds is jointly told by it’s protagonist, Lizzie and it’s author, Darcy. A budding YA author, Darcy Patel is a young Indian girl about to embark on the journey of becoming a published author and the world that comes with it. In between juggling the book world social life, financial stress and rewriting her first draft, falling in love doesn’t seem an option. Lizzie has just survived a most horrific trauma, yet all she can think about is the ghostly figure that saved her the day terrorists attack a busy airport. Told in a balanced fantasy/reality. The book tells the story of two different girls and the issues they must endure. As usual, Scott Westerfeld makes you forget where you are and draws you into a fantastic drama. If you’ve read any of his other books, this one comes highly recommended and is a different take on life after death, with a brilliant insight into the publishing world.
