Recommended by Mike Williams

Mike has been the Boffins storeman forever, it seems. Mike is also a writer of fiction and poetry. His 2 novels Old Jazz and The Music of Dunes were published by Fremantle Press, and are still available on request at Boffins. He has also published short fiction and poetry in various Australian literary journals. His reading tastes are wide, but mostly fiction and biography.

The futuristic world contained within Howard Jacobson’s new novel, J, is set in a sinister UK-like state existing in the wake of an event only referred to as ‘what happened, if it happened’. It is both a love story between two outsiders in a remote coastal village in an environment of state controlled behavior and the gradual realization of Kevern and Ailinn that perhaps their relationship is being engineered for a darker purpose. J is a complex tale and relies very much on the ‘unsaid’ to finally reveal its truth. An unsettling read from a writer at the top of his game.
