This is a true story of three generations of the Zinoffsky and Parret family caught in the events of the first half of the 20th Century's history and politics. It touches on the Russian Revolution in Moscow, World War II, displacement and being refugees.

As well it portrays this Estonian family as immigrants and what life was like in innocent Australia during the 1950s and 1960s. Primarily told through the eyes of a young girl, of the third generation, and the collective memory of the family, sometimes recorded in diaries, it is a story which includes some lighter even humorous aspects of the lives of those who with foresight and perseverance managed to refugee to freedom in the west and escape to a safe life. Subsequent waves of immigrants and refugees to Australia make this a current occurrence still, although now in very different circumstances.
