Barbara is an award-winning bookseller who has a special interest in fiction, especially Australian fiction and children’s books for all ages.

I finished In the Quiet and sat for some time just contemplating on the characters and the skill of this young Australian author. Eliza Henry-Jones uses Cate Carlton, wife and mother of three children as the main voice in the novel. Cate has already passed away and you learn about her life with her family through her reminiscences and also what she learns about how her family are coping since her death. Eliza is a trained grief, loss and trauma counsellor and her skill and expertise dealing with the difficult subject of the death of a mother adds to the poignancy and authenticity of the novel. There’s laughter and tears which ensures this first novel by a talented young writer will receive high praise from all who read it.
