It’s nearly 20 years since Michael Connelly wrote The Poet. It was his fifth crime novel but The Poet was the first Michael Connelly book I read, and I was so taken by it that I quickly read his initial first four novels and have eagerly anticipated the 22 he has written since The Poet. Jack McEvoy, a crime reporter is completely shattered at the apparent suicide of his twin brother Sean, a homicide detective with the Denver Police. A cryptic note had been left on Sean’s windscreen. Sean had been dealing with the murder of a young woman and Jack decides to further investigate the background his late brother was following. He discovers a series of police suicides across the country, all leaving notes - which he realises are from the writings of Edgar Allen Poe. Jack helps a team from the FBI which includes an agent Rachel Walling. The team race against time to find the person who has orchestrated these so called cop suicides and they have the extra problem of dampening down the media who are relentlessly pursuing the investigations. Michael sets a cracking pace and the ending is mind blowing. I’ve recently reread The Poet and it still lives up to my high expectations.
