Engaging in architectural design at the China Architecture Design and Research Institute since 1984, Cui Kai is currently the vice president, chief architect and director of Cuikai studio in China.

In nearly 30 years of creative practice, Cui Kai has completed dozens of works and won many awards for his landmark buildings. He put forward the architectural design theory of Land-based Rationalism and has published many academic papers and a number of monographs. He has been honoured with the highest recognition of achievement in China's building industry, the Liang Sicheng Architecture Award as well as being conferred a French Legion of Honour Medal in 2003. In 2011 he was awarded the title of Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
