Marijke is the Customer Service Supervisor at Boffins and has been a Boffin for over five years, and a bird fanatic for even longer. She reads anything interesting.

Leap is a wonderful and magical story about grief – which doesn’t sound like a good fit, but Myfanwy Jones weaves together the stories of Joe and Elise as they struggle with the loss of Jen.

Joe holds himself complicit in Jen’s death and three years after the fact he still struggles to make meaningful connections. He’s turned to parkour as a way to clear his mind and focus. The parkour scenes will make you want to take the sport up for yourself – both physical and meditative.

Elise studies the tigers at Melbourne Zoo, which her daughter Jen considered her favourite animals, and considers this her guilty secret, but she finds herself with a lot more time on her hands to indulge when her husband leaves – not entirely unexpectedly.

The real joy of this book is how these stories fit together and watching Joe and Elise grow and realise hidden or forgotten aspects of themselves. I’d highly recommend this book to young adults as well as fans of Australian literature.
