"Nature has spared nothing to make (Rottnest) pleasurable beyond all islands I have ever seen. A paradise on earth" wrote Willem de Vlamingh, a Dutch sea captain, in 1696. The islands plant cover has changed profoundly since Vlaimnghs visit and is probably the best studied flora in Western Australia.

Recent collecting activities have recorded 210 species on the island, of which 120 are native. This Bush Book presents 37 of the islands most noticeable plants, many of which would be encountered during a days visit.

Despite the many disturbances of the past 200 years, the islands native plants have shown remarkable resilience, with very few species know to have become extinct. The vegetation is fundamental to Rottnests beautiful landscapes and coastline, a beauty that is greatly enjoyed by ever-increasing numbers of visitors.

The authors of this book are active members of the Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association.

Jon Dodd is a botanist, plant ecologist and weed scientist with many years experience in these fields. He is also a volunteer guide at Kings Park.

Elizabeth Rippey is an island ecologist with a particular interest in the vegetation of islands. She has written several books including Plants of the Perth Coast and Islands.

Judith Harvey is a plant ecologist who has carried out research with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (and its predecessors) for more than 35 years. She is also an active member of the Wildflower Society of WA.
