Under the Broken Sky by Mariko Nagai – just beautiful. This is a verse/graphic novel about Japanese orphans in Manchuria during the Soviet Occupation in 1945. It’s a powerful story of survival and family and an unusual depiction of history. It’s like the film Grave of the Fireflies from Ghibli. It’s heartwrenching and hopeful and just one of those books you need in your collection. 14+
